The history of blackjack
Blackjack is one of the world's oldest casino games, having been first mentioned in a short story by Miguel de Cervantes in 1601. The story is based in the Castile region of Spain, and the game is referred to as 'ventiuna'. It was not until the game became popular in American casinos that it acquired its current name; players were offered a special bonus payout for getting a 21 with the Ace of Spades and a black Jack card. These days, this payout is awarded for simply getting 21 with any two cards.
Blackjack strategy
Simple blackjack strategy is based on knowing when to hit and when to stand. Most sources agree that it's wise to stand on 17 or more, and hit on anything totalling below 12. Basically, it all depends on whether or not you have nerves of steel!
However, another aspect to consider is the differing nature of special blackjack rules. In some games you may be allowed to Split or Double Down, which will improve your chances, or place Insurance for a chance to recoup some losses. Meanwhile, pay attention to the number of decks used in a blackjack game, as this has an impact on the house edge:
| Number of decks | House edge |
| 1 | 0.17% |
| 2 | 0.46% |
| 4 | 0.6% |
| 6 | 0.64% |
| 8 | 0.66% |
Blackjack cheats
Of course, some very clever people over the years have attempted to beat the system by counting cards. This means translating the cards dealt into a running score, and using this to calculate the probability of your desired card coming next. Famous examples include Raymond in Rain Man and the MIT Blackjack Team, but unfortunately for them, online blackjack card counting is impossible. Many casinos now use a continuous shuffler, or burn one card before play begins, to counteract the advantage that card counters would have. Mind you, we're sure any real blackjack fans would agree that tactics like card counting take all the fun out of the game.
